5-Star Reads of 2024

2024's Five-Star Reads: A Year of Outstanding Fiction and Thought-Provoking Nonfiction

What a year of reading! I'm excited to share my favorite books from 2024, each of which left a lasting impression for different reasons. I finished 35 works in 2024 and here are the ones that earned 5 stars.

Historical Fantasy That Breathes
Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles (Enemy of God and Excalibur) dominated my historical fantasy reading this year. These books strip away the typical romantic gloss of Arthurian legend, replacing it with gritty realism and high-stakes political intrigue. The way Cornwell weaves historical detail with myth is definitely my cup of tea.

Thought-Provoking Science Fiction
This year introduced me to some exceptional sci-fi that really made me think. Elder Race merged science fiction with fantasy elements in ways I hadn't seen before. Dogs of War tackled complex questions about genetic engineering and the nature of consciousness, while Summer Frost delivered the most chilling AI narrative I've encountered this year. Tusks of Extinction offered a fascinating look at de-extinction and wildlife conservation through a sci-fi lens.

Literary Gems
The Road stood out with its stark, powerful portrayal of father-son love against a post-apocalyptic backdrop. The Alchemist charmed me with its deceptively simple yet profound storytelling. Even Robert E. Howard's The Tower of the Elephant surprised me with its depth beyond mere sword-and-sorcery action. My Heart is a Chainsaw brought a fresh take to the "final girl" trope with its unique protagonist and atmospheric setting.

Nonfiction That Changed My Perspective
On the nonfiction front, Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism offered an eye-opening analysis of our economic system's evolution. The Autobiography of Malcolm X proved to be an incredibly engaging and humanizing portrait of a complex historical figure. And Marcus Aurelius's Meditations showed why it has endured for centuries, offering timeless wisdom that remains surprisingly relevant.
