THE BOY UNDER THE TABLE
Nicole Trope
Allen and Unwin RRP $29.99
Nicole Trope's debut novel wastes no
time building suspense; the reader
is thrown straight into the deep end
and is shocked and disturbed as the
protagonist, Tina, meets "the boy
under the table". Cleverly written from
differing points of view and making
effective use of flashbacks, Trope tells
the story of Tina - a young woman
working on the streets of Kings Cross -
and her chance encounter with Lockie,
a desperate boy who needs her help.
Across the country, Lockie's parents
Sarah and Doug are dealing with every
parent's worst nightmare in their own
ways, but both are struggling to cope.
Although the happy ending seems
inevitable, Trope's tale is a gripping
read that's difficult to put down. While
disturbing in parts, especially for
parents, Trope paints a compassionate
picture of how grief and despair can
dramatically alter and shape our lives.
