24. Go Time!
It’s Rick Resnick with 24th and final post about my new author journey, and how “The New Husband’s Survival Guide” went from concept to reality. (The book goes on sale TOMORROW on Amazon.)
After 15 months of work, launch day is almost here. And while I’m both eager and anxious to see how my book does in the marketplace, sales won’t affect how much I’ve enjoyed the journey.
In late 2023, I had a silly idea for a book. In early 2025, it will exist in the world. How many of us can bring a crazy concept to fruition?
I was lucky to have the time to give it a try and the support of so many friends and family members. And of course, my wife, who this book is NOT about! (See Post No. 8, “The Disclaimer.)
When you learn about selling your indie book on Amazon, you are hammered with the importance of getting quick sales. Summarizing: “If you sell a lot of books quickly, Amazon’s algorithm will promote your book. If you don’t sell a lot of books in the first 30-60 days, Amazon will bury your book, never to be found again.”
This had me on edge for quite a while.
But I’ve gotten great advice throughout the 15 months from Eric Koester, a professor at Georgetown and the founder of Manuscripts, “an award-winning publishing platform for modern authors.”
Paraphrasing Eric, here’s the advice he gave me a few weeks ago (in part to calm me down):
* You are now officially an author. You are in the game.
* This is a marathon, not a sprint.
* Your book is a new book for four years. Not four weeks.
* Now it’s about having 1,000 one-on-one conversations with people to spread the word about your book.
* Don’t be out there selling. Be out there sharing.
That advice did calm me down. And it is one of the reasons I wrote this blog. I wanted to share this book journey with anyone interested. Plus, writing it helped me remember the many twists and turns along the way – and how much I’ve learned.
If you’ve read the blog, thank you! If you read my book, thanks even more! I am eager to hear feedback on both, so please feel free to reach me at husbandschool.co/contact. All the best! – Rick
