The Witch, The Seed & The Scalpel can be seen as a homage to those great 19th century stories by the likes of Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, James Hogg, Mary Shelley; stories full of fogbound alleyways, decrepit cemeteries and creaky old country houses where all manner of supernatural forces plied their unholy trades. And Edinburgh, as it was in 1841, is the ideal setting for such a story. A time when, from the crawling shadows of the Old Town to the respectable sheen of the New, the city's streets hid many a dark secret.
