Ember Deleted Scene: Day 2
Welcome back to Café Ember! After the wonderful response to our first deleted scene, I’m excited to share another glimpse behind the curtain. Today, we’re exploring a powerful moment between Kai and Meiren that didn’t make it into the final manuscript of “Ember,” the first book in the Hollow Slayers Series.

Exclusive Deleted Scene TE: One of the most fascinating characters to write in “Ember” (Hollow Slayers Series Book 1) was undoubtedly Kai. His journey from manipulator to protector, from shadow to substance, evolved throughout the drafting process and will continue to develop throughout the series.
I’ve always been drawn to characters who exist in moral gray areas—those who’ve done terrible things for what they believed were the right reasons. Kai embodies this complexity. He’s ancient, powerful, and has made choices that have shaped the course of history itself. As the Hollow Slayers Series progresses, we’ll see more facets of his character unfold.
The scene I’m sharing today reveals a vulnerable moment between Kai and Meiren as they prepare for a crucial phase in their plan. It’s a rare glimpse of doubt from a character who typically moves with unwavering purpose:
Kai’s shadows boiled with uncharacteristic turmoil as they prepared for the next phase. The children’s sleeping forms—their children—cast small, vulnerable shapes across the safe house floor.
“Having second thoughts?” Meiren asked, watching his agitation.
“Not about them.” His violet eyes held ancient pain. “About the methods.”
“Bit late for that, isn’t it?”
“Two thousand years too late.” His laugh held no humor. “I helped engineer your fall, guided you to Boromir, manipulated Eve into offering her bargain. I orchestrated your salvation to serve our purposes.” His shadows rippled. “Does that bother you? It should.”
“Why did you do it?”
“At first? Orders. The Silver Queen wanted controlled chaos—power without free will. But then I…” His voice faltered. “I saw you changing. Becoming something beyond their calculations. And my loyalty shifted.”
“To what?”
“To whom.” His gaze held hers with uncomfortable intensity. “The more I watched you fight against your nature, the more I questioned my own role. Was I any better than the Queen, manipulating lives to serve my purpose?”
His shadows formed images of her through centuries—fighting, falling, rising again. The tenderness in these shadow-memories made her chest ache with something beyond physical pain.
“I started breaking protocols. Making decisions that protected you rather than the mission. Creating moments where your true nature could emerge.” His voice dropped. “I went from loyal soldier to traitor because I couldn’t bear watching what they were doing to you.”
Meiren studied him, seeing the weight of millennia in his eyes. “You’re still manipulating events.”
“Yes.” No defense, no justification. “But the purpose changed. From control to liberation. From serving the Queen to serving life itself.”
His honesty carried more weight than any explanation. Meiren found herself reaching for his hand, her flames meeting his shadows without burning.
“Redemption’s a complicated path,” she said softly.
“I haven’t even started walking it,” he replied.
TE: [leans forward] I remember writing this scene late one night, trying to capture that moment when someone finally confronts the weight of their past actions. For Kai, it’s not just about admitting what he’s done—it’s about acknowledging that even his current choices come from a place of manipulation, albeit with different intentions.
The line that always gets me is his simple “Yes” when Meiren points out he’s still manipulating events. No excuses, no justifications. Just acknowledgment. That’s when I knew who Kai really was at his core—someone capable of brutal honesty, even when it doesn’t paint him in a favorable light. This understanding of his character will resonate throughout the Hollow Slayers Series as his story unfolds.
So why didn’t this scene make the final cut of Book 1?
Primarily, it was a matter of pacing and revelation timing. This level of confession from Kai would have shifted the power dynamic between him and Meiren at a point in the story where I needed that tension to remain. Their relationship unfolds gradually throughout “Ember” and will continue to develop in future installments of the Hollow Slayers Series. This scene would have accelerated that understanding too quickly for the first book.
There’s also something to be said for letting readers piece together aspects of characters’ motivations themselves, rather than having everything explicitly stated. In the final version of “Ember,” Kai’s redemption arc is more subtly woven through his actions rather than his words, leaving room for expansion in subsequent books.
What I love most about this scene, though, is how it shows Kai’s awareness of his own moral complexity. He doesn’t claim redemption—in fact, he explicitly denies it with that final line. He knows that acknowledging his manipulation doesn’t absolve him of it. This self-awareness sets up fascinating possibilities for his character development throughout the Hollow Slayers Series.
And Meiren’s response—reaching for his hand despite everything—speaks volumes about her own journey. She understands that transformation isn’t a single moment but a continuous process. Her flames meeting his shadows “without burning” symbolizes that potential for change, for connection despite their complicated history.
These are the kinds of character moments that, while they don’t always make it into the final book, inform how I understand my characters. Even though readers don’t see this specific exchange in Book 1, it shaped how I wrote Kai’s and Meiren’s interactions throughout “Ember” and will continue to influence their dynamic in future books.
What do you think? Does this change how you see Kai’s character? Are there other aspects of his relationship with Meiren you’re curious about as the Hollow Slayers Series progresses?
Share your thoughts in the comments, and don’t forget that “Ember” (Hollow Slayers Series Book 1) is currently available for just $2.99—a perfect opportunity to dive into this complex world of shadows and flame before the next installment arrives!
