Demonic Ox arrives today!

The newest Penric & Desdemona e-novella, "The Adventure of the Demonic Ox", is being uploaded today. The time for an upload to penetrate the system varies wildly, from an hour to a day week, but I'll post direct links here as each of our 5 vendors goes live.

Amazon Kindle is first out the gate:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FHBMR3DN

Not yet up, but pending:

Kobo, Google Play Books, and Apple Books are interesting if you search by my name, because they each carry so many foreign language titles, if you scroll down. (Amazon ditto, I suppose.) These pages should populate in due course, though it may take a while for a new entry to sift to the top:

7/15 - Kobo is up! https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-...

https://play.google.com/store/info/na...

7/18 - Google Play direct link at last --

Direct Apple US link: https://books.apple.com/us/book/the-a...

(Some readers are reporting problems finding my Spectrum titles on Apple outside the US, as per Bo, below. If you are one, chime in in the comments with details. Though I suppose we should give it a bit more time to propagate...)

B&N Nook, same deal:

To recap:

The Adventure of the Demonic Ox

When sorcerer Learned Penric hears of the suspected demonic possession of an ox at his brother-in-law’s bridgebuilding worksite, he thinks it an excellent opportunity to tutor his adopted daughter and student sorceress Otta in one of their Temple duties: identifying and restraining such wild chaos elementals before harm comes to their hosts or surroundings.

What begins as an instructive family outing turns anything but routine when a mountain search becomes a much more frightening adventure for Penric and his charges. What is undergone there by both mentor and students will yield lessons both unexpected and far-reaching.

***

I'll make my usual spoiler discussion space post tomorrow, for the speed readers.

As always, reader mentions of the new title out and about on the internet and elsewhere are always greatly appreciated, as this blog and word of mouth are the only advertising my indie books get. Amazon always gets plenty of reviews; the other vendors are usually more in need. But no one will see any vendor pages unless they've already heard of the story someplace else, and go to look, so outside reviews and mentions are especially important.

Dazrin Yay!!!

I assume this is set after Penric and the Bandit? Edit: Per the lists at B&N and Apple, it is after Penric and the Bandit.

I'm waiting for Kobo to list it before purchase, but I've already refreshed about 5 times waiting. :D

Lois Bujold Jonathan wrote: "Any idea on a timeline for the audio version?"

Not yet; I have the offer from Blackstone, but the contract hasn't even had time to come through. "Some months" is my best guess.

Jill Vassilakos-long Loved it. One of those stories that you love so much you try to read it slowly, but that never works. Fortunately, I can read it again! I have to admit that I had read and wholeheartedly supported ascendency in a few situations in the past, without ever really thinking it through. Maybe when I reread I will start at the beginning of the series. That would make the second reading last longer! And, because I think it is required ?

I believe the ? is only required for the Author Q & A column.

Glad you enjoyed the story!

message 16: by Claire (new)

Claire Re typos, I don’t know what Talli found, but I only found two:

“Papa?” Rina bent over him. “If we shift you onto a blanket, I think Rina and I can drag you farther away from the dead ox, without you getting up.”

I think the second ‘Rina’ should be ‘Otta’.

“He helped teach Dobro and Maska, I think, he and Learned Master Tolga.”

Dubro not Dobro

Very much enjoyed the story, thank you!

message 17: by Claire (new)

Claire I was reading the Apple Books version, if that helps.

A searchable word string is all that's required.

message 24: by Siavahda (new)

Siavahda Still no sign of it on Kobo, alas! (I don't buy from Amazon any more either.)

Have you considered using Smashwords? I'm under the impression they're very self-pub friendly!

It has been submitted to Kobo; any delay is Them not Us, and out of my and my agent's hands, alas. Such a delay is not at all unusual -- in the early days it used to take B&N nearly a month, back before better automation. If it doesn't show up on its own in another day or two, Inquiries will be Made.

Jill Vassilakos-long Wanting more Penric (I loved Ox) I started again at the beginning of the series. (I’ve been comfort reading since last November and am very grateful for all the Bujold books.) One thing from Penric’s Demon that I had not thought through in the past and that will add to my enjoyment in the future: in many of the books people describe Penric as notably neat and clean. I think I’d just thought, “trained as a physician, of course he would keep clean.” I hadn’t connected it with one of his first conversations with Desdemona, when she makes it clear that she would appreciate it if he would take care with his cleanliness and appearance. Now, when I read (or listen, I’m listening to audio books while housecleaning) whenever Penric’s grooming is mentioned, I will hear it as an aspect of his care and respect for Desdemona. (There are scads of other fun elements in Penric’s Demon - when Des was giggling, I was laughing. The tartness of her voice at the beginning made the end deeply touching, observations on how the powerful use soldiers, and how deeply kind and decent Penric is, making him someone you want to spend time with… ) Lois, you done good. If you see this, I just want to say thank you.

Bo Lindbergh Well, finally! Purchased from Kobo (Sweden).

message 29: by NorthernStar (new)

NorthernStar Hooray - finally showed up on Kobo in Canada.

message 30: by K (new)

K D Martin Hi Lois, have you looked into listing on bookshop.org? They contribute some amount of the sale to local bookstores. I'll always buy anything you write, but would love to support my friendly local indie bookstore as well.

Libro.fm has a similar program for audiobooks.

message 31: by Richard (new)

Richard Boothe My, how everyone has grown! Much enjoyed reading AOTDO, twice. The final few pages offer plot bunnies I won’t cite, 1 because LMB is understandably paranoid about fan story ideas, and 2 this isn’t the spoiler discussion. I’ll also save for that a possible typo, or maybe just awkward wording by Wyn.

message 32: by George (new)

George Do any of these sources have the book in a DRM-free format? After Amazon closed the loophole that made it easy to remove the DRM, I decided to stop buying ebooks from them. I know Baen makes the anthologies available DRM-free.

I'm looking forward to spending more time with Penric and Desdemona!

message 33: by Joanna (new)

Joanna Google Books also finally got it (cannot post links, search for demonic ox will show it)
No idea about DRM there, Kobo has Adobe.
