3 Reasons God Is Your Only True Constant
By Jessica Brodie
Sometimes I’m convinced my body’s thermostat is broken. One second I’m sweating and swollen, so hot from ninety degree temperatures and rushing around, cooking dinner and doing chores and dealing with the dog, that I don’t think I can get any hotter. Then I get under the covers for bed and notice the air conditioning and suddenly I’m freezing, teeth chattering and begging my husband to go get me a sweatshirt.
I feel like that old Katy Perry song—I’m hot then I’m cold. What drives me batty is the inconsistency. I wish my body could pick one so I could just get used to it and adjust accordingly! I can’t count on feeling any one way.
Thankfully, God is nothing like my wildly fluctuating body temperatures. In fact, as I think about it, he’s the only real, solid stability I can count on.
Everything else in life changes—my body, the weather, the land, my relationships and my jobs, even my ministry has shifted and expanded over the years. Leaders come and go and nations rise and fall. This week I’m still reeling from the assassination of my Christian brother Charlie Kirk, not to mention the hate-filled rhetoric I see from those lauding the death of a man who lived his life for the Lord. It makes me dizzy watching the way our world can be so fickle in who is demonized or celebrated.
But God is the steady constant, the one unchanging, timeless perfection that holds me close and balances everything in pure and holy righteousness.
The Bible is filled with Scriptures that remind us of this. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (ESV).
James 1:7 calls God “Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change,” while Psalm 78:35 describes God as a rock. God himself declares in Malachi 3:6, “For I the Lord do not change.”
Everything else, like the hymn by Edward Mote reminds us, is sinking sand.
Today, I want to offer three ways we can know our God is steady and true, our north star in the ever-changing world around us:
1. God’s love never changes. From his mercies that never cease (Lamentations 3:22-23) to his unbroken covenants, his love is perfect and true, never failing, always enduring and dependable.
2. He is the same now and always, our Lord even before the dawn of time and throughout eternity. As Alpha and Omega, “who is and was and is to come’ (Revelation 1:8), God exists beyond time, perfect and unchanging.
3. God is reliable and trustworthy. His plan is clear and consistent, and his word is authentic and true. Indeed, he cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18, Titus 1:2, 2 Timothy 2:13, Numbers 23:19). We can always count on him.
So I might get frustrated at the world, or at my changing body temperature, or even at the news. But none of that really matters, for it’s all temporary. My hope rests on God alone, the only One deserving of worship and utter surrender. He is my creator and the lover of my soul, and I am blessed to belong to him.
