To the flame,
I now release
All that blocks my inner peace.
From the flame,
Drawing truth and power.
I call them to me this very hour.
Standing before this flame of might,
I invoked the sacred light.
To Chthonia,
I now descend.
To Lampadios,
Who shines within.
To Borborophorba,
Bringer of catharsis.
Entering Hekate’s Cave,
The journey begins…

The Moon Months of Release

Journey through the season to release what no longer serves through connecting with three aspects of Hekate via magick, mystery, and soul medicine.

Chthonia: The Descent

As The Wheel of The Year (in the Northern Hemisphere) turns towards releasing the vibrancy of summer, we, too, begin to separate from the solar and start the descent into the lunar mysteries. Chthonia translates to "Of The Earth," this is not the common Earth Goddess but a deeper spirit that dwells in the depths.

During Chthonia, we focus on healing the shadow through explorations of The Sustainer archetype and our personal boundaries. Ever her faithful companion, Deer is our animal ally. To "sustain" our real work, we are helped by the correspondences of rosemary, black obsidian, and the color orange.

Lampadios: The Illumination

As we enter Hekate's Cave for our journey through darkness to wholeness, we see the flame of Hekate's Torch burning within. Lampadios is one of the many ancient titles given to Hekate, and other Chthonic spirits, to symbolize the illuminated journey back to the soul. This month we focus on The Destroyer archetype as we prepare to release our burdens. What do you carry that needs to be released? Persephone, whose very name means "Destroyer," comes through as companion for the journey.

Ever the ally for the night journey, Owl comes through as we call upon this spirit, plus our individual avian allies as helpmates for the Cave Journey.

Aster, one of the key ingredients in the traditional Oleum Spirita formula, is the plant spirit, accompanied by tiger's eye and the color yellow.

Borborophorba: The Catharsis

An obscure title of Hekate, Borborophorba translates as "The Filth Eater." She is the one who accepts our burdens, the miasma weighing us down. Hekate's capacity as The Unseen spirit within all, both life and death, and how The Unseen within us can be illuminated, is the archetype. We end this month with the Animarum Catharsis, and our work afterwards focuses on processing the ritual, while allowing the space created by release to come into consciousness.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Vulture is our animal companion, supported garlic, red jasper, and the color red.
