More Than a Threshold
From September 9th, 2025:
It’s a couple days after the full moon and eclipse! Eclipses often shake things up and/or bring in quick (often unexpected) endings and beginnings. A time of release. They can be a threshold.
There are so many kinds of thresholds that we work with consciously or not. While we think of them often as physical structures or places, they can also be intangible. The start of a new school year or a job, growth of a new skill, being able to be present with something unfamiliar within yourself like a new way of doing something or an uncomfortable emotion. Thresholds can be there for you to jump through with zeal and zest, no fear whatsoever, or they may have obstacles and blocks in front of them behind them, all around them, for you to move through. What are the current thresholds in your life? Where are you growing? What do you want to move through or leave behind? Embrace?
This past winter and spring I worked on a major research and writing project for the thesis portion of my master of creative writing degree. When I started, I wasn’t in love with the idea I had first proposed. So I threw it out the window and started again. What came to me was looking at portals in three different literary works to see how they operated in relation to character transformation. Today that essay is available as a short book!
I’m excited to welcome More Than a Threshold: Portals as a Function of Character Transformation in Fiction: A Writer’s Craft Essay into the world. Available wherever books are sold.
When I stepped across the threshold into writing this piece (which was a process filled with many, many challenges and obstacles), I didn’t expect for it to become a book. I didn’t even know what my topic would be or what I’d discover. This, not having the answers at the beginning, was a somewhat new threshold for me to try. A practice in staying open to discovery and not having to figure everything out right away. How can we have all the answers at the start of a journey? And what fun is that? How can we embody enough safety from within to risk not knowing? That is part of the practice, I believe. And one for which there are only individual answers.
While this book is a guide for writers, it may open unexpected doors for your own story and journey, simply by applying the same lens you might if you were writing a fictional story to your own life. See what your main character (that’s you!) is moving through, transforming, and what are the thresholds that will help you on your journey of discovery?
