SOMETHING WAITS IN THE FAR REACHES OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM

In the depths of the Kuiper Belt, a collision between a science vessel and a lifeless alien ship sends shockwaves through the solar system. As a desperate salvage mission is launched, notorious war criminal Dee Wilding emerges as the only survivor.

Bruce Parynski, an experienced ferryman, finds himself embarking on a seemingly routine mission to deliver The Skydancer to Triton. However, with terrorism spreading like wildfire, Parynski’s journey takes an unexpected turn as he races against time to save his daughter and her friends from danger.

THE TRITON RUN is a gripping and heart-pounding space opera. The surviving members of Dee Wilding’s squad, haunted by the scars of their past and the unspeakable horrors they once committed, find themselves on this fast-paced odyssey, where redemption and enlightenment collide.

About the Author

Paul Edwards is a Science Fiction writer from  the northwest of England. Ever since queuing to see Star Wars at the cinema aged 5, he’s loved Science Fiction.

Inspired by his Uncle Bill feeding him battered paperbacks from Clarke, Asimov, and Herbert when he was too young to properly understand them it was only a matter of time before he decided to turn his hand to writing himself.

My review

4* stars

The Triton Run, a debut space opera by Paul S Edwards, is a novel with great ambition on a grand scale.

From Earth to the far outposts of the solar system, the author takes his readers on a crazy, dangerous journey to fight space terrorists and discover an alien race.

The book is slow from the start, so don’t expect too much action from the first pages. The author steadily builds the world of the solar system in the far future, where the corrupted government on Earth struggles for power against greedy corporations and rogue colonies, seeking independence.

In the centre of the plot is Bruce Parynski, a former paratrooper and nowadays an experienced pilot, who’s hired to deliver a brand new ship, The Skydancer, to Triton, one of Neptune’s bases. His mission is at risk when his daughter Jude, a former police officer, is taken hostage together with the President of Earth. To make matters worse, a mysterious alien ship has collided with a research vessel in the far corner of the system. Dee Wilding, Bruce’s former commander and a wrongly accused war criminal, is the only survivor of the collision.

There’re several main characters and a few points of view which give readers a bigger picture of what’s going on. There’s also a mysterious alien ship, piloted by the Quarti – a race of flying creatures.

The author draws his inspiration from books and shows like Expanse and Battlestar Galactica, creating an intricate web of political intrigues, betrayals, conspiracies, political assassinations, and terrorist attacks. The plot-driven narrative is packed with action (which picks up the pace in the middle of the book) as well as unexpected turns and twists. The gripping action and high stakes keep readers entertained to the very end.

I give the book 4 stars because of its slow start and narrative. To my liking, there’s a bit too much exposition, but it’s a matter of personal taste, I suppose.

I highly recommend this novel to all fans of sci-fi set in space with sublime world building, multiple points of view, and complex plot. The ending is clearly set for the sequel, so I look forward to continuing my space journey on The Skydancer.

P.S: I also love the colours’ combination on the cover 🙂
