The Lighthouse Nobody Knew About

Lighthouse in St. Martin. We found it!

Recently my husband gave into my begging to go to a tropical island for vacation. After checking availability and prices, he found a place in St. Maarten.  I checked the place out to find out what we could see and do while there. Of course, with my affinity for lighthouses, I researched to see if there were any on the island. I discovered there was one still in operation, so I added seeing it to our itinerary. However, when we asked our taxi driver where it was, he said no, since he didn’t know about it. When we went to a local attraction, I asked again about the lighthouse. No, shaking their heads, they’d never heard of one.

The island is divided in two parts, one a territory of the Netherlands where we were staying, and the other belonging to France. I rechecked my research and found the location of the lighthouse in a place called Marigot Bay, on the French side. However, when we booked a jet ski excursion on the French side, our guide didn’t know about it, saying “What is lighthouse?”

But once we were out on the water, my observant husband spotted the lighthouse and pointed it out. Our guide shrugged, barely impressed. Although the lighthouse isn’t grand or an architectural masterpiece, the 33-foot, white cone-shaped tower is still a lighthouse and still performs its task with a flashing light on top that guides boats into the Marigot harbor. Even though few people on the island know the lighthouse exists.

Can you relate to that lighthouse? Do you ever perform your duties on a regular basis, but nobody seems to notice? Whether you’re a homemaker, a maintenance worker, an office clerk or perform some task behind the scenes, it’s easy to feel unappreciated. I’ve felt that way before, especially when my children were young. We all want affirmation, but from whom? Do we need the recognition of others to justify our work? The truth is, even if no one else notices what you do, God is fully aware. He’s our boss. He sees and He cares.

Therefore, according to Colossians 3, verses 23 and 24, “whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
