Rereading: POOR TOM’S GHOST by Jane Louise Curry

One of Curry’s most celebrated books, winner of an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America.

Roger and his father live in London, Tony is a Shakespearean actor at the new Globe theatre, and recently he’s married another actor, Jo, who works mostly in television. Jo has inherited a very old house on the outskirts of the city, on the Thames, and she and her daughter Pippa along with Roger and his father Tony plan to spend a weekend there to see what it’s like.

The house turns out to be in poor shape, but under lots of later renovations are the bones of a fine house built in 1603, and as their research finds, the home briefly of an actor in Shakespeare’s own company, Tom, and his brother Jack, along with Tom’s new wife. Before long, Tony is acting oddly, and Roger and Pippa realize he’s somehow been taken over by the ghost of Tom. When Roger tries to help him, he finds himself also mixed up in the past life of Jack, Tom’s brother. Then the story gets really scary and complicated, taking Roger back and forth to Shakespeare’s past at a time when The Plague was ravaging London.

Recommended.
