All cheers, no jeers, in the county

The Red Devils have won three straight games (Monte Dutton photos). Click here.

For the first time, all of Laurens County’s football teams won last weekend.

All the teams, combined, have a record of 19-12. The schedules range from Clinton High School and Laurens Academy, each of which have played eight games, to Thornwell, which has played two at the varsity level. Only the Saints were idle last week.

Only the Presbyterian College Blue Hose are undefeated. This week’s home games are both in Clinton, where the Red Devils are playing Landrum on Friday night, and the Blue Hose are playing Stetson on Saturday afternoon.

PC is 6-0. LA is 7-1. Clinton is 5-3. Laurens is 1-6. Thornwell, which is mainly playing junior varsity games, is 0-2.

It’s homecoming at Bailey Memorial Stadium, which means a lot locally. At the Clemsons and Carolinas, the crowds are less variable. On homecoming, many fans of small teams, well, come home. At the big ones, fans show up for most every home game but celebrate formally a bit more.

Clinton (5-3, 2-0 Region 3-2A) takes on Landrum (3-4, 0-1) on Friday night at Wilder Stadium. Laurens Academy (7-1, 2-0 SCISA eight-man Region 1) plays Richard Winn Academy (3-4, 2-0) in Winnsboro. Laurens (1-6, 1-1 Region 1-4A) hosts Wren (5-2, 2-0). All three games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and almost surely will since lightning in the area is unlikely.

WPCC (96.5 FM, 1410 AM, largetime.net) goes on the air from Wilder Stadium at 7, then “Saturday Morning Rewind” goes off live from Whiteford’s at 9 a.m., followed by a replay of Friday night’s game at 10:30.

Raider fans can stream the Wren games at GoLaurens.com, beginning at 6:30.

A victory over Stetson (3-4, 2-1 Pioneeer Football League) takes Presbyterian (6-0, 2-0) a week farther on a season of the unprecedented.

The Blue Hose defeated the Hatters, 42-14, on Oct. 26, 2024, and haven’t lost since.

Only eight Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in the nation remain undefeated. A sixth straight victory at home would be the best in 17 years. One more victory ties the 1959 team’s distinction of winning its first seven games, the best opening in school history.

Last week PC defeated Butler (4-3, 2-1), 31-25, in Indianapolis, Ind. Steve Englehart’s team is ranked – 20th by FCS coaches and 19th by Stats Perform – for the first time ever.

No FCS team has scored as many points to date as Presbyterian’s 199. PC hasn’t yielded a fourth-quarter touchdown.

The Blue Hose have won in five different states – Florida, New York, Georgia, Indiana and, of course, South Carolina — during their overall 10-game win streak.

The Stetson-Presbyterian game can be watched on ESPN+, beginning at 1 p.m. The Blue Hose are not available on radio.

Clinton’s girls’ tennis team (10-1, 9-1) got a big payback on Thursday, defeating Mid-Carolina, 5-1, after falling to the Rebels in their first meeting.

The team score wasn’t close, but the matches were. Libby Dailey won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. Addy Derrick won 7-5, 7-5. Abby McMurray won 7-5, 6-4. Kayleigh Lawson won 6-4, 6-7 (10-7). Merin Orr won 6-2, 6-3.
