'The writing is immensely accomplished and persistently evocative. A lot of the time it’s as if you’re standing at my shoulder reading the words on the page. Kingsley Amis quipped that the essence of a good book is that no matter how many people are reading it you feel as if it were written to you alone: a secret missive you’ve been chosen to read. You achieve this in many parts of the book and some of the physical placing of the characters is fabulous. '
