Words in Progress

Well, I didn't win the Wolfson History Prize this week. But it was a HUGE honour to be on the shortlist of the 6 best history books of the year that, in the committee's view, combine original research with readability.

I congratulate Hannah Durkin on her well-deserved victory and prize of £50,000 (as much as for the Booker Prize). All the runners-up get £5,000, which is extremely welcome and, as my Scottish grandmother would have said 'better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick'.

The full Wolfson shortlist is here: all very much worth reading!
