John Varley died a couple of days ago. I recall reading his story collection, Persistence of Vision, in 1979 and being staggered. He wrote like nobody else.

I've tried over the years to like his novels, but I don't think long-form storytelling was his thing. It's his short stories and novellas he'll be remembered for.
