Foundational and Finished
It’s only on rare occasions that she gets to join our Wednesday night study group. Although she is a great-grandmother, I would never call her old. But she is very wise and a very good Bible teacher. So whenever she walks into the sanctuary, I smile (at least internally). And when she speaks, I listen.
I mention that because she was the one who pointed out the truth I want to share with you soon. We were covering the opening passage of Hebrews 4 which primarily describes the “rest of God” available to any/all who will respond to the gospel in faith. Part of what the writer wanted his readers to know was that God had established this plan to save mankind from the very beginning (v. 3). Having Jesus die on a cross was not “Plan B” for God; it was always His original plan.
It was then that the woman mentioned earlier said, “You know what my favorite part of this passage is? It’s the end of v. 3 that says, ‘…His works were finished from the foundation of time.’ It wasn’t just His plan of salvation that was completed then, it was ALL of God’s work. Therefore, those things I tend to get worked UP about, God has already worked OUT. Which means, of course, that I don’t need to worry about anything.”
Stop and let that reality sink in. Whatever situations are causing you great distress today, God has already settled in His mind how He’s going to work it out. Granted, it’s difficult for us to comprehend how today’s events were resolved from the beginning of time, but that doesn’t mean it’s untrue. God is not bound by time as we are. He saw your distressing events long before they occurred, and His solution is on its way. Again, in ways beyond our comprehension, He’s even factored your prayers into His ancient solution.
Worried about your budget? God has an answer. Stressed about your job? God has completed what will happen; it’s settled. Anxious about events in the news? None of them took God by surprise; He will reveal His completed work regarding them soon enough. In the meantime, worry less and trust His finished work! –Dave
