Something witchy
Gah! Hit me over the head or something.
I jump around my to-read pile like a flea.
I know, I know. I said I’d read Watership Down by Richard Adams, but what I am doing?
Not that.
Oh, and what happened to all those SPFBO 11 books?
Not that either.
Instead, I’m currently reading a cozy fantasy. LOL.
I suppose the horror of Buffalo Hunter Hunter drove me to lighter and less visceral fare.
The Witch in the Weeds by Alex van Wyst is a cozy, fantasy mystery set in what feels like a generic medieval world. The generic part isn’t bad, but rather very familiar so we can get on with the story. Here’s the book’s description.
“Of course, her husband was right about her being the smartest person he knew, but everything else he said reeked of troll burps.”
In the shadow of the Forest Vast, the simple folk of Feorlen suffer from magic and muddle in equal measure. If only there was someone clever enough to solve the mysteries of the realm . . .
Enter Rhetta Cur, Lance-for-Hire, investigator of mysteries great and small!
When her ne’er-do-well husband lands himself in debtor’s prison, Rhetta starts up a sleuthing business to try to make ends meet. A plague of rats and a mysterious murder down by the river have the simple folk of Feorlen clamoring for the lynching of the nearest witch, but Rhetta is not so sure. Will she be able to piece together the subtle clues before the perpetrator strikes again?
Half mystery and half fantasy, this humorous near-cozy adventure is sure to entertain!
I’m only a quarter into the story, but it’s fun so far and well written. It *is* entertaining. Our main character, Rhetta Cur is a no nonsense book monger who’s gotta make ends meet because of her deadbeat husband.
Enter the rats.
I’m a slow reader, but once I get this under my belt, I swear I’ll get to my re-read of Watership Down. (Right after all the other books that are on my reading list…)
