Altitudinal Differences: Flent-Faced (16)

The Psalms of Ascent were sung by the people of Israel when they traveled up to Jerusalem. They are fitting for you on your journey toward Jerusalem in this season. But you have to keep in mind when singing the Psalms of Ascent that the saints of old sang them on the way up to Jerusalem but you sing them having already trekked up to the heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews 12:22). This can be a bit disorienting given the altitudinal differences. And to make things even more interesting, they sang them going up to the holy city, but you sing them with the holy city coming down on your heads (Revelation 21:2-3).
Take Psalm 132 for example. Israel rejoiced with great joy as the ark of God was installed in Solomon’s temple. As it was installed there, God dwelt at Zion. The ark was God’s footstool and the people worshipped at that footstool beneath the heavy presence of God (Psalm 132:7). But, the whole earth has now become the Lord’s footstool, “Heavaen is my throne, and the earth is my footstool” (Isaiah 66:1). The heavy presence of God is upon you no matter where you go. Every Christian you meet is a living stone of His temple. Every bush you pass along the road His footstool.
