“Well, Oxford is adventure enough. I’m pleased to have met you as part of it,” he smiled. “This is certainly a different adventure to the one Mama wanted me to have.”
There was weight in his words. A sudden darkening of his eyes, his eager openness replaced by reserve. Charlotte frowned.
“Did your mother want you to do something else?” she asked.
Tom replied with half smile, half grimace.
“Like I said, this wasn't my first choice of college. Or rather, it wasn't Mama’s first choice. She thought I'd have better prospects at my first choice of college.”
