Update

I committed to communicating here more, so I'm back again ...

I'm working on whatever strikes my fancy on any given day. I just need to re-establish a decent writing schedule. Butt in chair at the computer. You add a few words every day, and in a week or two, you have something to work with.

Very satisfying day yesterday. I found a hole in the backstory of my FMC in the Australia historical I'm working on. I actually found the answer first, and that is when I realized I had the hole! Kind of backward, I know, but it still made a huge difference in the character's trajectory, and I was as excited as a kid with a new toy.

It reminded me of a spiritual lesson I learned a few years ago. You have to know what you don't want to know what you want. Sounds backwards, doesn't it? But when you think about it, you realize it is spot on. You think you want something, but you get it and find it's not right. You don't like it in the way you thought you would. But you would have always thought the opposite and maybe spent a lot of time, effort, and even money trying to achieve it only to find it wasn't the right thing. Once you know, you can eliminate it from your wish list, take what you've learned and apply it to figuring out what you DO want!

That happened to me with a job once. It was perfect in so many ways: a stable workplace, good pay, excellent benefits, good future, good location, great coworkers, easy work. I should have loved it! I expected to. But it was for a government entity, and once I got settled in, I discovered that I wasn't cut out for the restrictions of working for the government.

Learning that helped me know what I wanted in the future, what suited my personality and work style. So never be afraid to take a chance and try something! Even if it doesn't work out, you have learned valuable information that can make a difference in your future.
