A generational shift in the American workplace
A generational shift in the American workplace began about ten yearsago and is like to continue as the workforce ages. Over the next severalyears, organizations will experience waves of retirement as members ofthe Silent Generation and the Baby Boom generation leaves theworkplace. The less numerous members of Generation X and theMillennial Generation will form a shrinking pool of workers in their peakproductive years. Meanwhile, these four generations currently work sideby-side in Corporate America, each at a different life and career stage, and each with different perspectives, needs and expectations. This bookaims to educate the Millennial who is a recent college graduate on thegenerational differences in the workplace, provide some generalunderstanding of how Corporate America functions as a whole andsuggest ways to deal with various issues presenting themselves in thechanging workplace.I was motivated to write this book by experiences during my early yearsof working as a professional in Corporate America and having to adapt toa corporate environment when I left college. I had to learn the Do’s andDon’ts of professional employment. This book seeks to understand all the generations currently working andretiring from the job force through an examination of their history anddetails the factors that drive and motivate the different generations. Itattempts to show where generational clashes often occur. College to Corproate for the Millennial Recent College Graduate by Nathanial Portis focuses on the corporate environment, but it may also be applied to other work sectors, including government, health care, social services andnon-profit organizations. This book is based on countless one-on-oneinterviews conducted with individuals from various generations who areworking in and/or have retired from Corporate America. Additionally, Ihave included both personal experiences and reference material. Read more in the book.
