write like you mean it

i give this advice a lot to writers seeking my support, in one way or another. make it mean something. say the big thing with your whole chest, etc. etc. even though i struggle with that myself, of course.

meaning these days feels fleeting, ephemeral. it's personal really, the things that matter to us. and i wonder what we're supposed to write when crucial, life altering things matter to some and not others. whose meaning gets to mean more than the next person’s from moment to moment? and why should that matter?

isn't a writer's job to turn inward anyway? to not be afraid or apprehensive about sharing their view of the world, even if no one else really gets it? where does the power lie in just communicating a story, in that simple act?

i ask these questions of myself first and foremost, because i find it difficult to grasp the answer most days. to say here is my story, now it's yours, and for that to be enough. because can the writing ever be ‘enough’ for the days we're living?
