I’ve been doing a bit of creative thinking over the past few days on how I’d adapt my next series from the large body of An Fhiannaíocht stories.
I feel that most of Fionn’s early days and adventures have been (or will be) sufficiently covered in my ‘Fionn mac Cumhaill Series’. Any further stories from An Fhiannaíocht however, would have to be adapted in a way that aligns with the elements of the particular tale being told while also retaining the cultural resonance and context behind it (something English-only speakers are not going to pick up on).
One item I’m considering at the moment is ‘An Tóraíocht’ (The Pursuit). Like many people who’ve studied that particular story for the Leaving Cert, I still have strong negative memories of the formulaic plot and the poorly developed characters.
Diarmuid ua Duibhne does have potential as a character, of course., and I’ve always intended to drag him into the next series of Fenian tales.
Now, I just need to work out how to do that …
… with the appropriate serving of action and plot twists.
