In December 1948, green lights started crossing the New Mexico sky. They flew flat instead of arcing. They made no sound. And they kept showing up over the two places in America you least wanted anything showing up, which were Los Alamos and the Sandia base outside Albuquerque where the atomic bombs were assembled. Within weeks, Army intelligence put it in writing that a foreign power might be running radiological warfare experiments over the nuclear program.

So the government did what governments do. It convened the room. On February 16, 1949, Los Alamos director Norris Bradbury, physicist Edward Teller, future Nobel winner Frederick Reines, the FBI, Atomic Energy Commission security, and the country’s leading meteor expert sat down at the Secret level to explain the lights. Lincoln LaPaz walked them through the trajectories, the wavelengths, and the total absence of sound, and told them plainly that this was not a conventional meteorite fall. Nobody in that room said aliens. Nobody in that room could say anything else either.

What followed was Project Twinkle, a camera hunt across parts of New Mexico that produced one working observation post and a final report declaring the whole thing natural. The scientist who started the program went to the press, warned about a worse Pearl Harbor, and got investigated for it. Then in February 1952, two months after the case was closed as nothing unusual, Air Force Intelligence recorded that the project should stay classified precisely because no scientific explanation existed for any of it. This episode digs into both documents, the 209 catalogued sightings, the missing camera footage, and the transcript that stayed sealed until the government finally released it in July 2026.
