Extract from WiP
Sneak peek at my current work, book 2 of The Broken Destiny.
Book 2 begins immediately after the events of Book 1 (Rachel's Rabble). The Rabble find themselves detained aboard a military vessel while allegations of heresy surrounding their recent discoveries are investigated. Tempers are running high.
Extract follows...
The lion removed his helmet and shook out his mane.
“And what's stopping you, scum?”
Tarnhak sneered and thumbed his chest where his sigil of penance was hidden by his vest.
“This. You kill me, I die. I kill you, I die. Pretty shitty deal for me, eh?”
The lion passed his helmet to one of his companions.
“Hear me! This piece of shit and I are going to have a duel. I waive any penalty if I lose.”
He turned back to the big jaguar.
“There, now you...”
The rest of the sentence died as the jaguar's fist smashed into his jaw.
The lion staggered backward, spitting blood, broken teeth, and half a canine.
“You ruthing pieth of..."
Tarnhak's next punch came faster than the lion could track. It drove into his solar plexus, blasting the breath from his lungs and dropping him to his knees.
As he doubled over his jaw met Tarnhak's knee. His head snapped back and he toppled onto his backside.
The jaguar was on him instantly, massive paws clamping around his throat.
Leaning close to the lion's ear, Tarnhak whispered, “There is no honour. There is no glory. There is only life and death.”
His grip tightened.
The lion clawed at the jaguar's wrists, his struggles growing weaker with each passing second.
Without a word, Tarnhak loosened his grip.
The lion dragged in a desperate, rasping breath as the darkness in his vision receded.
Tarnhak released him completely and rose to his feet, looking down at the defeated officer. Blood ran from the scratches on his wrists where the lion's claws had torn through fur and skin.
“This ‘gang of criminals and lowlifes’ gave me a second chance. Now I'm giving you one.”
He offered a hand.
“Don't expect a third.”
The officer spat a bloody expletive and slapped the hand away.
Tarnhak shrugged.
He returned to his seat and resumed his meal, ignoring his own injuries as though nothing had happened.
