Return to Sender

The letter arrived without a stamp, an address, or a postmark.

Clara found it on the kitchen table even though she had locked every door before going to bed. Her name appeared across the envelope in her own handwriting.

Inside was a single sentence:

Do not answer the telephone at 9:14 tonight.

Clara checked the clock. It was 9:12.

At 9:14, the telephone rang.

She stared at it until the ringing stopped. A moment later, someone knocked at the front door.

“Clara?” called a woman from the porch. “Please open the door.”

It was Clara’s voice.

She backed away.

Another envelope slid through the mail slot and landed at her feet.

This one contained two sentences:

Thank you for listening.

I didn’t.
