“You gotta get even,” my friend, Maddox, says around a giant bite of pizza. He chases the lump of cheese he had been working on for the past two minutes with a large gulp of his seasonal beer.
“And why should I take advice from a man who can’t chew with his mouth closed, exactly?” I ask with a grimace as he grabs another slice and shoves the tip of it into his mouth.
Thankfully, he swallows before speaking this time. “My method of eating is irrelevant.” He points the pizza at me. “What is relevant is the fact that Crystal cheated on you and then dumped you via text message from the other guy’s house.”
A low blow, for sure, but I wave it away. “We only dated for like five months. If I got hung up over every woman I dated for almost half a year…” I huff. “Okay, so it was just her, but that’s besides the point. It wasn’t that serious.”
Maddox dramatically drops his slice along with his jaw, as if the two were attached to the same string. “You bought her jewelry.”
“I mean, yeah, isn’t that what you do when you’ve been dating almost six months?”
“I’ve never bought a woman jewelry in my entire life.”
Narrowing my eyes at him, I take a sip of my own beer. “Which is maybe why you’re single.”
“You bought Crystal jewelry, and you’re still single.”
He’s kind of an asshole, but he makes a fair point.
