Kid Gloves or Brass Knuckles?

In spite of the savage disappointments liberal-minded citizens have experienced over the past Trump-infected decade, my wife and trusted friends remain hopeful that democracy will rebound and flourish if there is a successful “blue wave.” They believe that if Democrats win the House and Senate, they should aggressively pursue an agenda that repairs the damage done by the Trump administrations. They also believe that attempting to impeach Trump a third time, though warranted, would be a distraction.

I have wrestled that position and believe Congress can, and should, do both.

Trump has betrayed our nation and our allies. He is a traitor — a corrupt and demented Russian tool, as witnessed by his abandonment of Ukraine. Though addle-brained, Trump is nonetheless animated by a Satanic, albeit moronic, energy. Like Milton’s “Arch fiend,” he has made his intentions clear: “To do aught good never will be our task, / But ever to do ill our sole delight.”

So, I believe that IF the Democrats win the House and Senate, they should thwart Trump’s agenda and improve the lot of the neglected middle and lower classes. However, they should also impeach Trump as soon as possible. He is an imminent danger and cannot be allowed to further destroy our economy, dismantle our democratic institutions, and defy the rule of law. He should be removed from office as soon as possible, then be tried for the manifold crimes he dodged by virtue of his 2020 election.
