Time travel
I have a weird relationship with time. I treat it with disdain and forget all about it, so it gets its revenge by creeping up and scaring the hell out of me. When I’m writing, hours can go by in an instant. When I’m reading, something that took a few seconds of subjective time can easily eat half an hour of so-called ‘real’ time. Every time I looked at my watch I got a shock - so I stopped wearing it.
I used to think that I travelled through time at a fixed rate of one second per second but I’m sure this is no longer true. These days I feel lucky to get 45 seconds to the minute - sometimes it’s a lot less (e.g. when I’m late for a train). Didn’t a day used to be a significant period of time? You could do a lot in a day. Not any more.
Most people tend to agree that this is a growing problem (at least those who have orbited Sol more than forty times) but no-one can agree on the rate of acceleration of time. Someone should measure it, but what with? If time was truly speeding up, how would we know? Seeing as the universe is expanding at an ever increasing rate and that rate is uniform in all directions, then we must be accelerating. If that’s the case, then time will most definitely be speeding up, but relative to what?
I think we should be told.
