To celebrate the US Release of RAVEN I wanted to share this with those who admire the Viking spirit, those who admire the awesome man that was King Harald Hardrada, and those who might like to learn a little about this Norwegian King who, with his last throw of the dice, tried to seize the English throne. And just think, Hastings WOULD have turned out very differently if the English King Harold Godwinson had not had to fight the Norsemen before facing The Conqueror. Oh, and the idea for this piece was that it should be rich in kennings (a kenning being the old Norse way of figuratively mentioning something without using the obvious word – a bit like a riddle) For example, some kennings for blood are: ‘Battle-sweat’, ‘Slaughter’s dew’, ‘wound-sea’. Pretty evocative aren’t they?
