Review - Jarvit

Author: April Day

Cover: It is hard to tell what kind of story lies behind this cover. Is it a wilderness adventure? I can't be sure. The one thing that sticks out, however, is the lack of author name. I'm curious and the cover does draw my eye so I'm going to check the blurb and find out what the book is about.

Blurb: Well, the cover is deceiving. This is a YA fantasy novel about a boy who finds out he is to be executed, befriends his captors maid and discovers he has a mystic power.

When an elderly mystic receives a visit from an Interpreter of the faith she discovers that a young girl holds the future of their faith in her hands.

As she sets out to find her, Jarvit searches for answers to his place in the puzzle. With friends and dogged determination, their beliefs are put to the test as they face many trials along the way.

It is a tale of magic, warlocks and gods. I am very keen to read the Look Inside.

Look Inside: The sample is just over 1 chapter long. It tells of Jarvit's master being killed and how he is taken into captivity. His new master (captor) is cruel and dangerous. With one snap of his fingers he can cause people to turn to dust. The first part of the chapter reminds me of Zelda and the mayor's office with the Zora fish sitting there, the messages being given and the robber who tries to steal the mail. The second half is about his journey from his old home to the captor's home and the scroll that instructs the executioner to kill him. By the time the journey comes to an end, Jarvit is all too aware that his chances of living are very slim. With a servant who treats him abysmally, threats from his new master and being made unwelcome in his new quarters, keeping out of harms way is going to prove difficult.

Conclusion: This is an interesting story with great imagery. The pace is decent and it keeps you captivated. The only thing that detracts from it are the small errors with punctuation and the occasional word. For this reason I give it a 6/10.

Recommendation: Maybe/Definitely. This is a good story with an interesting adventure. The characters are colourful and the use of language transports you to another time. There are places where the punctuation could be better and that might put some people off, but the story is strong enough to overlook them. If you are a Zelda fan or enjoy fantasy adventure then you are going to like this book about magic, warlocks and gods.
