Starting again.
Today, I started work. Proper putting pen to paper (literally) work on the next novel. I've written some brief character descriptions of the ones that I know I want. I've written some background to the world and I've decided on the title.
So, ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to present my next novel:
The Last Train.
In the not-to-distant future, climate change has finally been proven as the world has been irreversibly changed by humanity's abuse of the planet. The ice caps have practically disappeared and a virus that has lain dormant for millions of years has been released, causing billions of deaths.
A few years after 'the event', a small group of people are living on a farm on the outskirts of Newcastle, trying to eke out an existence when surrounded by the rapidly decaying ruins of civilisation.
When they are forced off their land, they choose to take a steam train from a nearby rail museum and use it to follow the rumours of a place where civilisation is trying to start again.
That's the basic idea, anyway. I'm sure it'll change as I go along. I've emailed the Stephenson Museum to try and go along and grill them about some of the more technical aspects of the story, but I think it's going to be a goer... And I'm going to try and write it more quickly than any of the others I've written so far. We'll see how it goes.
