Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell Excerpt

“But, I love you, Reginald!” I almost screamed at the Confederate officer standing before me.

“And you know that I love you, Sue Ellen, but it cannot be.”

“Tell me why. Tell me why you continue to resist me when you know that you have feelings for me. Strong feelings that could set the world ablaze.”

Reginald turned and gave me a cold, hard look. “The words you say are truer than you know, Sue Ellen. That's why it cannot be. Now please, don't make me regret coming here to talk with you. Let us just spend time together, enjoying the brief moments of pleasure this God-forsaken war will allow.”
