I suppose I should just be glad I got any words written at all today, considering I just finished story #4 of this series the day before yesterday. I would normally give myself a few days to figure out the course of the next story before getting started, but the first 84 words came to me last night while I read in the tub, so I got out and came in to start the story before I forgot. And this morning I wasn't sure I'd have anything more to say on the matter just yet, but it turns out I did. I'm finding the voice of the story and have reached a point this morning where I can go one of two directions. But that's the thing I'm worried most about.
I can write this story in the allotted two weeks, but how much of it would I have to tell versus show in order to get it done in that amount of time? I don't know. The beginning I've established has the potential for a much longer story, I just don't think it's the story I WANT to tell, or at least not the way I want to tell it. I'm not interested in writing a novella, if for no other reason than I can't, currently, see a way to tell it without it being bland and predictable and cliche, and I try very hard to avoid those things as much as I can. There's a way with this one, too, I just need to figure out HOW.
I think I need to break out the notebook and work it out that way. I carry the damn thing everywhere, and half one already practically filled, and every single time I use it, it helps greatly in figuring out the story I want to tell. But just like the self-imposed deadlines, I sometimes forget and just stumble along blindly. I really need to get back to making the notebook AND the deadlines a regular thing when I write. I keep underestimating the effectiveness of both in favor of just jumping in and WRITING.
Organization. I know better than that. I just have a bad memory sometimes.
However, in the case of THIS story, I already know the STORY, I just have to decide if I want to tell it completely, or write the condensed version. Maybe I'll give it another thousand words or so and see how things are going. If it looks like I'm on the path to a 20,000 word story, or more, I will probably condense it. This story is part FIVE of a six-part story series; I think it's important to keep them all at short story length, and not have one installmant swallow the others. So we'll see how it goes.
