Taking a Long Walk on a Cold Winter Afternoon

The weather has been flirting with Indian summer, then bringing a cold spell. Now it looks as if winter has a final chokehold on the weather for the season. Frigid temperatures make it more interesting and challenging when I take my walks. Even if I schedule them for taking in the afternoon, the mercury doesn't seem to climb much above the freezing mark. Still, I prefer it to using a treadmill or other piece of exercise equipment. I too bore easily and will just quit.

Once I'm out in the cold, I'm motivated to finish my trek faster and get home to warmth faster. In fact, I expect I'll be setting new records for my finishing the jaunt this winter. I've heard you burn more calories in the cold weather, and I can see one reason what that is the case.

What freaks me out is the younger folks wearing sandals and flip-flops, their bare feet and toes exposed to the elements. There is a thing called frostbite, and that can only lead to a worse things. The good news is I don't run into that many instances. Most are bundled up like me, their legs pumping to get their roadwork completed.

Right. Snow removal by hand should be a new exercise program. It certainly burns off the calories and gets the old heart to pumping. After Sandy hit, a warm winter seems only fair. Thanks, Michele.

Marti I walk early in the morning before shower and breakfast, which means that I need to walk later now so it is not so dark. It is colder than later in the day, and some calories from breakfast get burned off better. Marti
