What have your pets' illnesses taught you?

                                                          CUDDLES

Our little black-and-white cat Cuddles is a heart center of our family.
She has the sweetest purr imaginable. Because she is so quiet, sometimes we
don't pay as much attention to her as we do to our chirping/screeching bird
Sunshine and our bouncy, barking dog Leaf.

Lately though, Cuddles has been getting a lot of our attention. She has
been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Our veterinarian says this is a common
condition in aging cats. She's lost way too much weight, is thirsty all the
time, and cries a lot.

To help her heal, we are giving her a medication the vet prescribed.
Ever try to give a cat a pill?

Intuitive little Cuddles knows we are trying to help her with the pill.
We put it in a pill pocket that seems to appeal to her most of the time. She
prefers when Linda breaks the pocket into little pieces and feeds it to her by
hand. Whatever it takes.

Cuddles's serious new condition, of course, gives us pause. It's a time
to feel grateful for all the love and joy she's brought since she entered our
life as a rescued kitty fifteen years ago. We treasure her friendship and are reminded
that a quiet companion should never, ever be taken for granted.
