Magic Monday Morsel: Feb 4th
This a bit from chapter one of Kaelen's Fall, the first book in the Redemption trilogy. Enjoy!
The sound of someone whimpering tugged at Kaelen through the darkness. He turned his head toward the sound and jumped back as something sharp pressed into his cheek. The pain the sudden movement caused made him groan. He took a deep breath to calm himself then concentrated on opening his eyes. The sky above him was a soft blue and spotted with small fluffs of clouds. Below him, the culprit for the poke to the face, was a pile of straw. He sat up slowly and ran his hands over his face. If he ever made it back home, he’d have to thank his brother for the soft landing.
The whimper came again and Kaelen moved slowly toward the shaking bump under the straw to his right.
“Hello?”
Whoever was under the straw moved and the soft crying turned into a wail of pain. Kaelen cringed.
“Look. Don’t move. I’ll brush the straw off, alright? I’m not going to hurt you.” He’d just uttered the words when it occurred to him he might already have done just that. What if the person was in that much pain because he’d fallen on them?
“Kaelen?” His name was a mere whisper on the woman’s lips. His heart dropped. Had Zeen fallen as well? He brushed one handful of straw at a time until a very human, very naked woman with long brown hair was revealed. She opened large blue eyes and tears spilled down her cheeks. “It hurts, Kaelen.” She blinked and frowned through her tears. “Why are you so small?”
Kaelen’s heart stopped. “Niana? What did they do to you?” He carefully moved closer and brushed the hair from her face. “Is that your blood?” Anger sparked deep inside of him. “What did they do, Niana?”
The now human sized Faerie sat up, choking on her sobs, and he sucked in a breath. Two long, ragged gashes ran down the length of her back.
“Are they broken?” Niana lost control of her tears once again. “I can’t feel them move, Kaelen.”
“They’re… they’re gone. It looks like they were ripped out.” He pulled her head to his chest, careful of her back, and smoothed her hair. “Let’s see if I can get your back fixed up.” He laid his hand gently over her back and cringed at her cry of pain.
Kaelen’s stomach dropped. Nothing. He couldn’t feel a stitch of magic running through him. He fought the urge to throw up, concentrating on Niana to help alleviate the shock. Mortal. He was mortal.
“I’ve lost my magic, Niana.”
The Faerie stilled under his touch. “We’re trapped here, then? It’s true?”
He gazed at the sky. “What do you mean, true?”
“Your sister! Your evil whore of a sister!”
He didn’t need to ask which one she was talking about.
