"Popular" books

As many avid readers know, there are a lot of top selling books that make you just want to rip out your hair. You wonder to yourself, “how the hell did that book make it this far?”

Sometimes I can’t wrap my mind around how people can enjoy such mediocre books, and completely turn a blind eye to wonderful pieces of literature. Books like Fifty Shades of Grey and Twilight make me wonder what kind of thought process people have to decide what book is qualified as good and what book is not. One is about a woman who pays a man to essentially treat her horribly, womanize her, and make her feel like she has absolutely no control, and somehow this is known as ‘mommy porn’. The other is about a teenage girl who thinks she can’t possibly live her life without the guy of her dreams, which is a brooding, self-loathing pansy of a vampire who sparkles in sunlight.

What has reading come to? How could things like this be on any best sellers list? What ever happened to sitting down and reading a worthwhile book, where you learned valuable lessons and felt a real connection with the characters? It makes me so sad to go to Walmart, and see so many of the same, lame my-boyfriend-is-a-vampire-and-I-love-him-even-though-he’s-moody-and-wont-make-me-a-vampire-because-it-will-ruin-my-soul type books. Even the Captain Underpants books have more meaning in them than that.

I really do hope at some point the book market will stop flooding with the tweenie supernatural romance crap, and get back to the action, back to the adventure, and back to the fantasy of reading.
