Interesting, unfortunately, I haven't read many books over my life. Still, this kind of information is nice to have, I could use it in the future. Thanks!
Thanks .... I would really love to win a book and write a review for it as I am passionate about writing things that I experience and books are an experience according to me ...... I hope a win one ... I will definitely write a review then ..
Keep trying Meha, if you have relevant shelves, rate books & write reviews - and enter enough Giveaways! - you will win eventually. Some people win a lot. I think it may be partly due to location as well. So many books are available to us in the west, people in other areas may not be so fortunate.
The first round of giveaways I entered I won. I was like oh my god , I can't believe it. But then when I went for another round of giveaways I wasn't so lucky and so on. After I read your blog post and did a little extra research I updated my account and now I'm hoping that it's more likely to get picked. BTW- the book that I won the first time is called Once we were brothers.
Overall, useful blog post.
Thanks for writing this! I've been entering in a lot of giveaways since I began using the site, and I still haven't won. Hopefully by following this, that will change!
Keeping my fingers crossed! I've been active for quite some time now, but have only just within the last couple of days started entering competitions. Thanks for the tips though!
Just found out about this site yesterday, and it seems very interesting! These giveaways sound like it's a good deal on both ends - both the author and contestants. I just won a giveaway (Web of Evil), and I've never been so excited for a book! I plan to stay on Goodreads for a while to re-gain my love for books. :)
This information was very helpful! I won a couple of books, but that stopped after not being online for some time. Thank you for the advice!
This post is from 2013. Since then, Goodreads seems to have changed things. I do all your suggestions, but I have not won a book in a long, long time. I was told that none of these suggestions apply anymore. Can you please update this and tell me how I can improve my chances now? Or maybe I can't.
Similar to Beth's question, I'm finding it difficult to search for giveaways in the genres that interest me, and I think something in the workings of the site has changed. For example, I like books about medicine and dogs (not necessarily together), but when I put words like 'medicine', 'medical', 'doctor', 'dog', 'dogs', and 'animals' into the tag search, I get no results. However, clicking on the tag suggestion of 'non-fiction' gives me a few medical and a few dog books, including some with 'dog' in the title.I read on a blog that authors could pick genres to list their books instead of tags these days, but nowhere do I find a genre search other than picking suggested tags (which aren't organized in any logical order). Does anyone know how to search the giveaways other than the tags that don't appear to be used anymore?
I agree that the rules have changed. I have hundreds of books, over a hundred reviews often in depth, and a wide range of books on my multitude of shelves. A few years ago I entered giveaways and won a lot, at least six times. Now I enter them every six months or so and don't win a single copy. It's frustrating. I am an avid reader and want to support authors with honest reviews, plus I love getting those ARCs, but the way it stands the odds are not even near being in my favor. Grrrr.

So I've submitted many book reviews to Goodreads, but the rules have changed and they don't care anymore. I think this is a result of their new ownership: Amazon.
Ahhh that makes sense. I'd forgotten about the Amazon acquisition! Always something corporate that screws it up for us small fries...
Has anyone wondered whether the amount of giveaways you enter has an effect on your chances of winning? I only found the giveaways feature just over a month ago, entered a few (maybe 10-15) and won one within a week. Since then, I've entered possibly over a hundred (I just want to read books, I'm happy to read most genres!) and I haven't won again. Am I entering too many? Do they think I'm too keen? I also wonder whether I took too long to read the book I won. It arrived just over 2 weeks after winning and I finished it around 10 days later and reviewed it straight away. Should I have sat down a powered through on the day it arrived?
You guys it's very very simple. There is no algorithm any crazy math equation implemented to determine the books you get to win. It's called a giveaway, and just like the name states, and how they have ALWAYS been, you either enter or not enter the giveaway. If you are selected, which is randomly generated, you win. No tricks no nothin. It is what it is. I hope this helps the people who are actually REALLY wanting to know the real answer to this.

At that time, they told various ways they determined giveaway winners, including how often a person contributes book reviews. This has changed. Not all giveaways are random draws. That is not the definition of "giveaway."

Yes, that is the goal of a giveaway. But a random draw does not differentiate between reviewers and nonreviewers. As for the terms and conditions, what you read is not what they a used to be.
Definitely some good information! I'm on Goodreads at least 3 times a week, and I try to write reviews but most of the time, I just end up starring the book and moving on. From now on I'll try to write something about every book I read. Thanks for the info!
I have written reviews, I'm active on the website too. But still I don't know why I never win any of those. One giveaway that I entered was a book in a language that I didn't know, and I won. Firstly when I saw the mail, I was so super-excited, but then I got to know the language. It was heartbreaking. But still I was happy about winning it. But then, I didn't receive the book, it's over two months now.
And since then I haven't won any other.
After trying over and over and over again...I came to the realization that the giveaways are actually FIXED. They play favoritism, which is bullshit. They should at least let everyone win at least ONE book a week, if not ONE a day.
Thank you for this valuable information (I rarely read the terms and conditions, probably a bad habit)!
I've entered quite a few giveaways the last week - and actually won on my second day. It's a book genre that I don't actually read, and I rarely write reviews. I won my second book today - a collection of poems - and never read poetry. It makes me doubt the genre-specific preference, but I am only a very small minority. (The first giveaway I entered because I knew my mum would love the book. The second was because I've never tried to read poetry, so I thought it would be something interesting, even if I don't really enjoy it.)
Goodreads are fucking assholes!!! If you've won a lot in the past, they never let you win again. That's what they did to me and yet I waste my time trying to win again every so often only to be disappointed. That's not fair! They should let EVERYONE win one a month if nothing else! ASSHOLES!!

as long as you always update on your reading progress. do a short review and enter a lot of giveaways ...you always get a book within a week......always worked for me
Chloe wrote: "Kaitlyn wrote: "I've entered quite a few giveaways the last week - and actually won on my second day. It's a book genre that I don't actually read, and I rarely write reviews. The first book I won was only available for UK people, which means there will be far fewer entries.
Thank you i have been trying so hard to get afew arcs i dont even mind genre my children have grown up i love reading so this would be an ideal hobby!! I spend a fortunate ( most of my wage on books) but my reviews are obviously after book has been published!! Your article was very motivaring thank you lets hope i can win something soon and it can be a regular thing xxxxxx
