Snippet

Why hadn’t she ever taken up running?

“Jonah! Jennifer!”

Oh yeah. Because running, in theory, sounded great. In practice? She was going to pass out any second.

Her lungs felt like they were on fire. Her side ached. Her legs felt like they were one step away from giving out on her. But she had to get to Jonah and Jennifer before one of them was hurt. And preferably before a snarling angry Wolf with swollen testicles caught up with her.

Which, he would very soon, but she hoped it would be after she found Jonah and Jennifer. She had run off in the direction Jonah left in, calling out to them every few feet, hoping she could actually find them. But soon after she reached the parking garage next to the Second Police precinct, she realized her plan was beyond stupid.

Jonah was a Wolf and could run for hours. She was a severely out of shape witchborn human female who needed a much better support bra if she was going to keep this up for any length of time.

She entered the lower level and started walk-jogging toward the office, her lungs and legs on fire and threatening mutiny. The glass encased office awkwardly stood out from the rest of the cement infrastructure. The lights made an unattractive glare against the large grey metallic desk that bore a catalog of dents and scratches to match the metal folding chair sitting behind it. That was where an on duty officer usually sat, now empty of course, where the garish shine of the sterile white walls would have illuminated the officer like some kind of God of Ugly Office Space. On the desk sat a multi-line office phone she could use to call Max and tell him how bad she screwed up. Again.

Please let the door still be open! She pulled on the glass door and when it didn’t budge, she cringed. She thumped her head against the glass. This was such a bad idea.

Thump. She wouldn’t be able to catch up to Jonah and Jennifer without a miracle. She didn’t even know where to start looking.

Thump. Either or both could be dead as she leaned into the glass door, her lungs barely processing the oxygen it greedily sucked in, being the useless human again.

Thump. And then there was Renato. Who was no part of this. She should just forget about him as he, no doubt, has forgotten all about her. Thump. Thump. Thump.

She needed to focus on the more important issues, not her blasted ego! And most definitely not the raw aching that centered in her chest.

Thump. She hurt Harden for nothing. Her Harden.

Thump. Well, at least she now knew that Wolves were just as susceptible to a kick to the crotch as human men.

Thump, thump. Man, he was going to be pissed. He won’t forget this. Won't forgive her either. He only wanted to protect her. And she knew how seriously Wolves were about protecting their own. It was the same reason why she was here, wasn't it?

Thump, thump, thump. Correction; he won’t forgive her without a lot of food. And cable tv. And electricity. All of which, she didn't have.

She noticed her burning hands were bleeding all over the glass door. Great. When the officer on duty came back, that would be the first thing he’d see and then she'd have to explain... What exactly? She had no clue what to say–

The hiss made her back straighten and she had that moment she’d only seen in horror movies where the serial killer was right behind her, ready to gut her as soon as she turned around. Fear was a rapid river coursing through her. While she had hoped for a miracle like this, there wasn’t much that was divine about her new predicament. If Jonah was around, he was very quiet. And Jennifer? She was still living... or not living.

She had a very bad feeling Jonah was in trouble, if he was still even alive.

There was only one choice here for Roselyn, one action. One thing she had to do even though her hindbrain screamed that her only chance to survive was to run away, and not to, under any circumstances, turn around.

Roselyn turned around.
