A Little Batty

I tromped into the SFA Wesley Foundation the other day and asked a couple of the girls if the pastor, Tom, was there.

“He’s out on the back,” they replied, “taking pictures.”

I wondered what in the world he might be taking pictures of as I wandered toward the back door.  I saw Tom as I pushed through the door and noticed immediately that he had a camera with a huge lens in his hand as he focused on something in the corner of the porch ceiling.

“Come and look at this!” he said as he motioned toward the brown object stuck in the corner.  As I got closer, it finally dawned on me that the object wasn’t a dirt dauber nest or a wasp nest, but it was a small, furry creature.  Tom was taking pictures of a little brown bat that was perfectly content hanging upside down taking a siesta.

It intrigued me that this little guy had decided to hang out right in broad daylight on the Wesley Foundation back porch.

I couldn’t help but think that this pint-sized bat’s upside-down view of things reminds me of how believers are supposed to view the same world that the bat peers out upon.

Paul tells the church in Corinth, in 2 Corinthians 4:18; “So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”  He continues with the assertion in Chapter 5:7; “For we live by believing and not by seeing.”

An interesting mindset that Paul is suggesting…to not get too caught up in the worries of this world but to walk by faith in Christ.  I’m sure to the rest of the world, that viewpoint sounds a little “batty”!  To those of us who are walking by faith and not by sight, we endure the struggles of this world by holding onto our faith in God and not trusting in human strength or wisdom.

Okay, it’s official.  You can tell the whole world that I’m a little “batty” because I look at the world a little bit upside-down, trusting in the Lord at all times and in all situations.  So, how about it?  Could it be that you’re a little “batty”, too?
