Bird Nest Near the Altar

When church let out on Sunday, I helped a precious lady down the stairs and out to her car.  It was a beautiful day and it was an honor to escort this saint of God from the Lord’s house out to where her husband was getting into their vehicle.

As we passed by a small crepe myrtle tree in the front of the church, I noticed a bird nest about six feet off the ground nestled within the branches.  I showed it to Nadeyne as we marched by and she was excited to see it and thankful to the Lord to see it.

I couldn’t help but think to myself that it was a marvelous thing for a 90 year old woman to be captivated by a bird nest and to give praise to God for it.  I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe she has the right idea.

Maybe we should be more aware and in awe of God and his creation.  Perhaps we ought to be smitten by the beauty of a sunset and the warmth of the sunshine in the spring.  Possibly, we should be thankful in all circumstances and filled with praise on our lips over the smallest of blessings.

The psalmist says in Psalm 84:2-4; “I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the LORD. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God.  Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O LORD of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God!  What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises.”

What if we worshipped the Lord wherever we found ourselves and rested in the Lord’s blessings at all times?  What would happen inside of us if we gave thanks to the Lord wherever we found ourselves?  Could it change our attitudes toward others and toward our life circumstances?  Could it help us put things in their proper perspective?

Next time you see a bird nest, be sure to give thanks and worship the Lord.  Yes, wherever that happens to be, just praise the Lord.  For just as the swallow builds her nest near to the Lord, so may worship be ever near to our hearts as we live in awe of God’s mercy, grace and love.
