Mount Melory was way north of Inyanga, a place where white men seldom ventured. It was a Catholic mission station. Brave Irish nuns had been sent there to stop paganism. Every year young maidens were sacrificed to the ‘rain gods’, cruelly thrown from high up on the Mount to their deaths below. It nearly always worked as miraculously the rain would fall shortly after these savage events! If it didn’t work more maidens were sacrificed until the rain gods were satisfied.. when the rain came. I was shown this natural stone ‘throne’. At the highest point the weather had worn it smooth and hollowed out. A shudder ran through my young body as I sat there, imagining what it must have felt like, being one of those unfortunate maidens...
