Selected Poems

My newest book is in essence my oldest book, in that it includes poems from all my previous books. With the exception of "Dead Horses" which was published in 2012, the earlier books stem from the late 70's--mid 80's, so it is exciting to think they may find a new audience.

Why such a time gap? Although I have continued through the years to write and publish poems in journals, in 1983 I took a job as editor of Illinois Racing News (a job I still hold) and became immersed in Thoroughbred horse racing and breeding. Though I had horses since childhood, this was a new milieu and you could describe my adventure as tantamount to running away to join the circus. "Dead Horses" contains many poems relating to this era. I will have new books forthcoming in the future, but Selected Poems contains what I think is the best of my work.

Klaas Am I wrong to associate horse races with gambling or is this a typical European thing? In fact I did in the previous century in Ireland with a group of friends. We gambled together and won about one pound each. Must be cool to work in this business if you love horses or gambling or both.

Horse racing is all about gambling! The industry has been hurt a bit by the advent of casinos. Handicapping horses is more of an intellectual sport than pulling the handle of a slot machine.
