It has been a long time since I closed a book and pined for the story world I've just left. Like the first two books in Sherwood Smith's Dobrenica series,
Revenant Eve is a wonderful adventure to lose yourself in. I feel as if I have struggled on foot across Europe on the eve of Napoleon's rise to power, in the company of four companions I will never forget.
They are humble, intelligent, honorable and vulnerable heroes whose common and individual struggles touch on the universal human experiences of finding oneself, validating oneself and coming to know oneself.
The plot is driven by Kim's urgent need to save her future by saving her ancestors in the past, and to find her way home again to her own time and place.
The triumphant high point of this novel left a lump in my throat and, for me, will remain one of the best moments in fantasy fiction.
