Living like a 'Character'
Well, I must say, the blog tour for Of Blade and Valor has been entertaining, emotional and inspiring. I am so grateful to those who have participated. They are a wonderful cast of characters in my journey that I am forever indebted to. Speaking of characters...I enjoy volunteering from time to time as I put on a period costume whether it be maiden or voyageur to help educate and entertain. History is a favourite subject of mine and around here, we nurture it. This year involves many war of 1812 bits and of course there are always tall ships, voyageur runs, historical reenactments, First Nation performers, pipes and drums and more. It's a beautiful thing. I recently became a 17th century mother who cared for her family of 10 in the actual building that was restored and furnished within. Loved it. Next I'll be a town crier of sorts as we welcome people from all over the world to our local events. It is inspiring to 'be' the characters that may have once lived and it shows the respect everyone has for our deep heritage. From Scottish paddlemen from the Orkney islands, to soldiers who gave their lives for the early battles...it is truly an honour to participate. It connects me to my community and to the very thing I love most...try it someday. Put on a costume, help out and enjoy the festive and educational fun that is to be had by taking part in an historic/cultural event. Cheers! - C. Alleway
