Writing the first chapter
The first chapter of the first book of a new series, one of the things I find hardest to get right. It's taken me a week now to write it and I'm still not quite satisfied.
There's so much to cram into one chapter, so much information, introductions without being obviously introducing and so many descriptions.
I haven't started my previous books in this way but this one is different, this one is the start of a series which I currently see no end for, I already have the first 5 either planned or in planning and the world in which the stories are set just keeps growing and expanding in detail along with the characters who I'm close to knowing inside out.
The set of books are going to be the Tanah series; set in the fairy tale kingdom where preternatural and fae species are protected.
This set of books has been in the back of my mind for over ten years but writers block got in the way for most of those and then finally they started speaking up and talking to me.
The first book is about Ebony; vampire princess who's following in her mothers footsteps to become queen. Unexpectedly she falls in love, not with her chosen husband to be, but with another, not only below her but another species altogether.
Ebony's betrothed is over possessive, not only of her but of his rightful place as king and as a result takes drastic steps in order to gain what he thinks he wants.
Most of the characters will make appearances in the other stories and I'm pleased that the story lines are already weaving together, introducing characters ready for their stories at a later date.
My goal for today; to try and ignore the scorching heat, hide inside and work on this first chapter until it's right.
