I have to admit to being a little embarrassed by Vientiane. It's funny and it hurts, which is what a good book should do, but there's no getting around that it covers touchy ground. Some people just completely miss the irony and take it as a promotion of what it describes. But then along comes a random reader who completely gets it and without any prompting writes 5-star review. I'm not sure that it quite makes it all worthwhile, but it certainly helps!
