Horror-Struck in Benchurch

If this headline seems puzzling but makes you curious, you are all primed to read Bram Stoker's The Judge's House.

This short story is quite dark about a student who goes to the town of Benchurch to study, at The Judge's House. Seems innocent enough, right? Except this is a Bram Stoker story and we all know what he's famous for.

Of course, it's free at Tuesday's Tale of Terror

David Elkin As always Paula, you pick the good ones. Thanks

Paula Cappa My pleasure, David.

Werner I read "The Judge's House" more than 20 years ago (and still remember it well). It's definitely one of the more chilling Victorian ghost stories. So far, except for "Dracula's Guest" (which is a Dracula outtake excised by the original publisher from the book in order to make it shorter), this is the only short fiction by Stoker that I've read; but I wouldn't mind reading more of his short work sometime!

Paula Cappa I agree, Werner, about reading more of Stoker's short fiction. I plan to as well.

David Elkin Finally finished the story. It was interesting but I was somewhat put off by the conclusion of the tale as the ending was abrupt.

Paula Cappa I felt that too, David, but didn't mind it. It was kind of a snip! Only 4 sentences. And that snip made me cringe. I wonder if that's what Stoker wanted for the reader. Bring the reader to a sudden halt for effect.
